These Are The Telltale Signs Of Election Fraud

Written by Ryan Prost

In 2016 the BBC published an article wherein they give “the telltale signs of vote rigging”. BBC journalist Elizabeth Blunt had seen many elections across Africa as an observer.

Blunt writes that these are the signs.

  • Too Many Votes
  • High Turnout In Select Areas
  • Large Numbers Of Invalid Ballots
  • More votes than ballot papers issued
  • Results That Don’t Match
  • A Delay In Producing Election Results

The signs of election fraud are documented as being part of an overall effort to rig voters in favor of one party over the other. In countries such as those in Africa, this is a subject scholars write about extensively.

Election Rigging In Africa

According to several scholars, several nations in Africa are rife with election fraud, especially in regards to documented cases of vote buying.

In Kenya it is reported that since as far back as the 1990’s buying votes is a regular activity by political campaigns. It is even a budgeted expense.

In a study by Eric Kramon,  “Where is vote buying effective? Evidence from a list experiment in Kenya”, he writes, “In the 2002 election, 40% of surveyed adult Kenyans reported having accepted a bribe in exchange for their vote, and 22% for the 2007 elections.”

Kramon continues, “According to the data gathered by the Coalition for Accountable Political Finance in Kenya, cash handouts to voters represents around 40% of the average parliamentary candidates’ campaign budget, making up the largest budget item.”
