Lewis Powell was born Lewis Thornton Powell in April 22, 1844 he was a Conderate soldier who was convicted and executed in 1865 as a conspirator in the Lincoln assassination.

He actually lied to sign up for the military, because he was underage.

Lewis was nicknamed as “Lewis the Terrible” for his murderousness in battle. He was also known as Lewis Paine or Payne.

Lewis’s April 17 arriving at the Surratt boarding house which Mary Surratt operated was the piece of evidence that ultimately convicted Mary of her part in the conspiracy to assassinate President Lincoln April 14, 1865.

Lewis Powell was known as a quiet dedicated soldier with a hot temper.

John Wilkes Booth wanted Lewis to join him in assassinating Lincoln, but he decided instead to attempt to assassinate U.S. Secretary of State William Henry Seward.
