If there was one thing the commies ever got right it was the AK47 , it definitely was not healthcare or coordinated response to a new deadly disease like HIV/AIDS. Some Cubans chose to self infect themselves on purpose to get infected with AIDs rather than live in the harsh reality of the failure of Cuban communism. You read that correctly they infected themselves with HIV to get sent to the sanitariums, for life, rather than live any longer as a free citizen in communist Cuba.
As you know Human immunodeficiency virus infection and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) is a sexually transmitted disease which exploded in new transmissions in the 1980s. In 1986 Cuba faced a new health crisis, the rise of HIV and AIDS. Their response? Send those infected to isolation for life.
Those sent to the isolation areas which were contained hospitals and living areas were given extraordinary luxuries, that is in comparison to the rest of Cuba. These included working air conditioning and a steady supply of food and shelter. It is for this reason that eventually some Cubans chose HIV/AIDS over the failed communist “utopia” of Cuba.

Cuba’s ‘Special Period’
Cuba as a member of the Soviet Union relied heavily on the Russian support it received and once that ended after its dissolution in the 1980s Cuba’s resources dried up significantly.
The living conditions in the sanitariums where HIV/AIDS patients were forcibly sentenced to life in were considerably more comfortable then life on the outside of them.
